Ürgüp is one of Cappadocia's main settlements and a useful base for exploring the eastern and southern parts of the region. It combines a functioning Turkish town with historic stone houses, cave dwellings, restaurants and access to nearby valleys and villages.
It is larger and more town-like than Göreme, making it a good choice if you want more local services and a less tourism-focused atmosphere.

Wine production has a long history in Cappadocia, and Ürgüp is one of the region's main centres for wine tourism. Vineyards and wineries can be found around the wider Ürgüp area.

Ürgüp or Göreme?
Choose Göreme if you want to be close to balloon operators, major tourist services and a dense concentration of restaurants.
Choose Ürgüp if you prefer a larger town, more local everyday life, wine-focused experiences and convenient access to southern Cappadocia.
Both work as bases, and staying in one does not prevent you from visiting the other.
Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa
Mustafapaşa lies south of Ürgüp and is easy to combine with a visit to the town. The village is known for historic Greek and Turkish architecture, churches and stone mansions.
Ürgüp and Ortahisar
Ortahisar is another useful addition to an eastern Cappadocia itinerary. Its natural rock castle and historic streets contrast with the larger town of Ürgüp.

Ürgüp has boutique hotels, historic stone properties and cave accommodation. It suits travellers who want more town facilities and a less concentrated tourist atmosphere than Göreme.
How long should you stay in Ürgüp?
One or two nights can be enough to explore the town and nearby attractions. Add time if you want winery visits, Mustafapaşa, Soğanlı or a slower southern Cappadocia itinerary.
Getting around Ürgüp
The town centre can be explored on foot, while taxis, local dolmuş services and rental cars are useful for nearby villages and attractions.
