Uçhisar is one of Cappadocia's best-known villages and is dominated by the natural rock formation known as Uçhisar Castle. Its elevated position gives the village broad views across the surrounding landscape.

It is a useful alternative to Göreme for travellers who want cave accommodation, dramatic views and a quieter base.

What is Uçhisar known for?

Uçhisar is best known for its rock castle, panoramic position and access to Pigeon Valley. The natural rock formations around the village contain caves, rooms and passages carved into the soft volcanic rock.

Uçhisar Castle

Uçhisar Castle is the village's defining landmark. The natural rock citadel contains numerous rock-cut spaces and provides a high viewpoint across Cappadocia.

The climb includes stairs and uneven surfaces. Check current access conditions if mobility is a concern.

Pigeon Valley from Uçhisar

Pigeon Valley connects Uçhisar and Göreme and takes its name from the pigeon houses carved into the rock. It is one of the established walking routes in central Cappadocia.

You can walk part of the valley as an excursion from Uçhisar, but check the route and return transport before setting out.

Where to stay in Uçhisar

Uçhisar has cave hotels, restored stone houses and boutique properties, many taking advantage of the village's elevated position.

Compared with Göreme, the atmosphere is generally quieter and less concentrated around tourism. Check the exact hotel location because some properties are built on steep streets.

Uçhisar has traditional Turkish restaurants as well as more contemporary dining. It can be a good choice for a longer dinner, particularly if views are important to you.

Uçhisar or Göreme?

Choose Göreme if you want the largest concentration of restaurants, tours and tourist services.

The two are close enough that you can stay in one and visit the other during the same trip.

How to get to Uçhisar

Uçhisar can be reached by taxi, local dolmuş, rental car and pre-booked airport transfer. Organised Cappadocia tours also commonly include the village.

If you are arriving by air, compare Nevşehir Airport and Kayseri Airport before booking your flight.

One or two nights can work well if Uçhisar is part of a wider Cappadocia itinerary. Staying longer suits travellers who want a slower pace and more time for Pigeon Valley and nearby viewpoints.
