Ihlara Valley is one of the most distinctive landscapes in the wider Cappadocia region. Unlike the dry valleys around Göreme, Ihlara is a green canyon shaped by the Melendiz River, with rock-cut churches and shelters along its walking routes.

The valley is in Aksaray Province rather than central Nevşehir, so it usually requires more planning than attractions around Göreme, but it offers a very different side of Cappadocia.

Ihlara Valley churches

The valley contains numerous rock-cut churches. GoTürkiye notes that some of the imagery differs from the better-known churches around Göreme and has similarities with early Christian traditions associated with Syria and Egypt.

When should you visit?

Spring and autumn are particularly appealing for walking because the vegetation adds a different character to the landscape. Summer can still be enjoyable, but plan around heat and carry sufficient water.
