Göreme Open-Air Museum

The Göreme Open-Air Museum is one of Cappadocia's most important historic sites. The rock settlement contains churches, chapels, refectories and living spaces carved into the landscape and reflects centuries of monastic activity.

The site includes Elmalı Church, St Barbara's Church, Serpent Church, Dark Church, Çarıklı Church and Tokalı Church. Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985.

Göreme and hot air balloons

Hot air balloon flights are one of Cappadocia's defining experiences, and Göreme is one of the main bases for visitors taking part. Flights take place early in the morning and depend on weather and aviation conditions.

Valleys around Göreme

Göreme is surrounded by several established walking areas. Rose Valley, Red Valley, Love Valley and Pigeon Valley can all be included in a hiking itinerary.

Routes vary in length and terrain. Some trails include steep sections, loose rock and limited shade, so check the route before setting out and carry suitable footwear and water.

Testi kebabı, gözleme, mantı, meze and Turkish breakfast are among the dishes worth trying. Popular restaurants can become busy, so book ahead if a particular restaurant is important to your plans.

How long should you stay in Göreme?

Two or three nights is a useful starting point for a first Cappadocia visit. This allows time for the main sights, a balloon flight or sunrise viewpoint, and at least one valley walk.

Four or more nights make sense if you want a slower trip or plan to visit places such as Avanos, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Ihlara Valley and the underground cities.

Getting around Göreme

The centre is walkable, although some streets are steep and surfaces can be uneven. Taxis, local dolmuş services, organised tours and rental cars are useful for destinations outside the town.
